The Scroll To Text Fragment is a controversial feature implemented in Google Chrome version 80. This feature work only of the Chrome browser on Desktop and android only does not support iOS. It is designed as a global process to deep-linking or deep-link to any portion or part of a web page document. This lets the users link to a specific part of a page, using a text snippet provided in the Link or URL.
How to Create Links That Scroll to a Text Fragment
Let’s show how to create links or deep-linking that scroll to a Text Fragment.
- Go to the following link to take a look at this feature in action if you are using Google Chrome.
- When you click on this link, Chrome will load our homepage and then go down to the bottom of it and select to highlight the “Directly Link” text: dowpie.com/#:~:text=directly%20link
- We did not do something special to turn on this on our website.
- Google Chrome pays attention to the parameter at the end of the URL.
- When you load the website page, it goes to the text that you match what you have specified in the ULR or Link and highlights it.
How to Use the Feature of Scroll to a Text Fragment
Here you can use this feature in the most basic form in the following steps:
- Go to the website page and add #:~:text=WORD to the end of the web page’s address, replacing “WORD” with a word of you are choosing
- Use “%20” in place of a space character
- For example, let’s say you want to create a link or URL to the word “Historically” on the Wikipedia article about Loins.
- You would take the address https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lion and #:~:text=Historically
- The resulting link would be: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lion#:~:text=Historically
The new deep linking feature also supports more complex instructions instead of just one or two words description. This may help with more complicated files or documents. For more further technical information read the draft Text Fragments standards document.
There are a lot of discussions about the privacy concerns with this link feature, but this stable release is already available in the Google Chrome 80 version. Other browsers have not yet signed up.
