Sunflowers spread their seeds according to a mathematical equation. Due to their simple shape combinations, they’re surprisingly easy to draw. There is an elegant spiral of seeds spiraling into the middle of a sunflower’s face in the form of a Fermat’s spiral. In addition to being phototropic, sunflowers also follow the sun. A flower’s face tracks the sun as it rises and sets from dawn to dusk when it’s young. Flower petals end up facing east when they are older, so they can catch the sun in the morning. If you want to draw in natural light, consider the light source you are using. Practicing drawing from many angles and perspectives is easy when the flower moves and rotates.
You probably thought drawing a sunflower was a very daunting task when you were first learning how to do it. As you can see from this guide, it does not have to be difficult to understand when broken down into several simple steps.
Method 1
Step 1
Create a circle. In the center of your paper, draw a large circle to serve as the sunflower’s center.
Step 2
The petals should be sketched.
Step 3
The petals will be added next. Drawing diamond-shaped shapes around a circle based on a reference photo. Give the sunflower some character by bending or curling some of the petals. You can keep layering more petals until the sunflower looks fuller.
Step 4
Simply add the stem. A thick stem will be added next, which will extend almost to the end of the page.
Step 5
In this step, leaves should be added.
Step 6
Add a few smaller stems that branch out from the main stem on both sides. Afterwards, add leaves of various sizes at the end of these stems. The drawing can be made more realistic by curling some of the leaves.
Step 7
Concentric circles should be drawn in the center.
Step 8
Sunflowers have a depth in their centers. We’re going to draw two concentric circles in order to figure out how to sketch it. Don’t worry too much about getting it perfectly straight, as they will be filled out with texture shortly.
Step 9
Describe the seeds in this sketch.
Step 10
Begin drawing rows of small ovals around the perimeter of the flower’s center. A second ring will be much denser than the outer ring, which should be fairly spread out. To finish off, just make a few ovals in the very center, keeping the background mostly white.
Step 11
Make the sunflower more defined.
Step 12
Now that the guidelines have been erased, let’s give the sunflower some definition. Taking the petals first, begin by sketching some creases in their center. In the leaves, draw veins and add fine hairs to the stem.
Step 13
Place the embellishments. To make your sunflower drawing a finished illustration, you can add some embellishments to it. Using a protractor, you can make a curved line with a circular border and draw small circles. As a result, the viewer’s attention is drawn to the sunflower’s head.
Step 14
Ensure that the drawing is inked. Ink is the final step in completing our illustration. With a pen, go over the pencil lines carefully on a scrap of paper. In addition to the line work, you can add some texture to key areas, such as the stem, the leaves, and the petals, once you have completed the line work.
Method 2
Step 1
Draw a circle at the beginning. Flower centers are often referred to as eyes or disks.
Step 2
The lines in each set of curved lines should meet at a sharp point at the flower’s eye. The process should be repeated all the way around the circle. This is how petals are formed.
Step 3
Add shorter, curved lines between each petal, letting the lines meet in a sharp point. Add short, curved lines between the petals in the second layer.
Step 4
Make a point where the short, curved lines between the near and far petals meet. Behind the first two layers of petals, these triangular figures form another layer.
Step 5
Then, draw another, smaller circle within the flower’s eye and give additional detail to the flower’s center.
Step 6
The two parallel lines should extend under the flower. Let the lines meet in the middle. The stem will then be formed.
Step 7
The two curves from one side of the stem should meet at a point similar to the tip of the petal. The leaf of the flower is formed from these two curves. From the base of the leaf to the tip, draw a curved line to indicate the leaf vein.
Step 8
Add additional veins to the leaf as you continue to detail it. To illustrate the central leaf vein, draw short, straight lines or slightly curved lines from the central vein to the leaf’s edge.
Step 9
To create the eye of the flower, add dots and circles in an assortment of sizes. In fact, it’s a collection of small flowers that form the seed-bearing disk.
Step 10
The sunflower needs to be colored. Its leaves are green and its centers are yellow. Sunflowers can, however, also be red, orange, purple, or rusty in color.
Method 3
Step 1
A flower’s center should start here.
Step 2
It can be surrounded by a row of petals.
Step 3
Increase the number of petals at the tips.
Step 4
The stem and the leaves should be drawn.
Step 5
Make a small flower starting at the center.
Step 6
You can surround it with a row of petals.
Step 7
Make a small flower from a leaf.
Step 8
More petals are needed.
Step 9
Make tracings using a marker and color it.
Method 4
Step 1
Start by drawing a large circle in the sunflower’s center and then draw the various shapes around it. As shown below, you can then add petals to the flower. The bottom of the flower should have a leaf attached to it.
Step 2
This illustration can then be further customized by adding details. Each petal should have a few lines drawn around it. The leaf should also have a few lines added to it.
Step 3
This cartoon sunflower can now be colored plainly. Dark brown should fill the center while yellow should fill the petals. Its bottom should be green in color.
Step 4
You can add several small circles containing orange or yellow colors into the middle of the sunflower. Create all these circles quickly and effectively by duplicating one circle and moving it around.
Step 5
Each petal is given a darker tint using the gradient tool. The darker shade must appear near the sunflower’s center. On the yellow circle and on the leaf, you can also add a second color.
Step 6
It sounds complicated, but it’s really simple. The center of the flower should be surrounded by a brown circle. Once the shape of this new shape has been created, use transparency to hide it. Repeat this process three times. The center of the flower must be covered first. To cover the petals in the front, you can create another circle like this one. To the petals that are behind, add a third circular shape.
Step 7
Lastly, you may wish to duplicate the shapes displayed in the illustration below that are encircled by a pink outline. Reduce the size of these shapes and color them white. Transparency can then be used to conceal the left-hand side of each of these shapes.
Method 5
Step 1
Make a mark in the center. Draw a round bunch of sunflower seeds in the center. Where the petals should be, it’s the brownish round object in the center. Draw a circle to begin.
Step 2
The center needs to have details. Ensure that the center appears realistic. Adding a few lines will give the sunflower seeds a furry appearance.
Step3
Provide depth. In the center of the seeds, draw thicker and darker lines in order to give the seed more depth. Seed centers are generally much darker than the surrounding areas.
Step 4
Add petals to the flower. Next, we will be discussing one of the most essential parts of the project: the petals! It will probably take the longest and be the most challenging step, at least it did for me when I first began.
Step 5.
The first layer of petals should be completed. As you draw the first layer of petals, be sure to wind them counter-clockwise around the bunched seed area.
Step 6
The next layer of petals should be drawn. Having drawn the first set of petals, we will now draw the backset of petals. You can usually see the backset of petals on a sunflower if you look closely. The flowers become bigger, prettier, and more distinctive when this happens.
Step 7
The stem must be drawn. Begin by drawing the lowest petal downwards. Simple, isn’t it?
Step 8
The leaves are sketched in. Make sure a few leaves are scattered around. A symmetrical leaf looks really unnatural and boring. Do something different! Make the leaves not all the same size or in a row.
Step 9
Detailed information is required. In this last step, more detail is included on the leaves. There are midribs on every leaf, as you can see.
Step 10
Veins should be added to leaves. Finally, the leaves should be adorned with veins. Veins enhance the realism of your leaves. Your leaves are now complete!
Step 11
Your sunflower will stand out more if you color it.
Conclusion
The steps to drawing a sunflower have been discussed. We can draw many more beautiful flowers in the future, but for now, this is all that’s needed. In this lesson on how to draw a sunflower, you will draw your own beautiful, realistic sunflowers in no time if you follow the steps we have provided you. If you like it, you can try another flower after you finish this one. Good luck on your artistic journey. Hope you enjoyed learning how to draw the sunflower. If you keep practicing, eventually you will be able to sketch any flower just as easily as you did when you started. I wish you the best of luck.
