Lucas started his career in 1967 as a teaching instructor in a class of U.S Navy students, where he taught documentary cinematography. While at the school, he directed a short film titled Electronic Labyrinth: THX 1138 4EB, which went ahead to win an award during the 1967-1968 National Student Film Festival. This success earned him a scholarship by Warner Bros to observe and work on making a film of his choice.

In 1969 together with Coppola, they co-founded American Zoetrope and produced THX 1138, which was not a success.
