Lucas started his career in 1967 as a teaching instructor in a class of U.S Navy students, where he taught documentary cinematography. While at the school, he directed a short film titled Electronic Labyrinth: THX 1138 4EB, which went ahead to win an award during the 1967-1968 National Student Film Festival. This success earned him a scholarship by Warner Bros to observe and work on making a film of his choice.
In 1969 together with Coppola, they co-founded American Zoetrope and produced THX 1138, which was not a success. He then decided to create his own company Lucasfilm Ltd and directed American Graffiti in 1973, which was a commercial success as it grossed over 200 million. After the success of American Graffiti, Lucas started writing and directing Star Wars, and this film became the first film in the original Star Wars trilogy.
