Benjamin Solomon Carson Sr. is the name given to him when he was born in 1951 in the state of Michigan. He is the son of the late Robert Solomon Carson, Jr. and Sonya Carson. He and his brother were brought up by the mother after the divorce, and they had to relocate to Boston.
In 1961 they relocated to south Detroit where Carson attended White Higgins Elementary School, then joined Wilson Junior High School in the seventh and eighth grade. In the ninth grade, he attended black Southwestern High School graduating on top of his class. On his college education, he attended Yale University where he graduated with a B.A in psychology in 1973.
He would then enter University of Michigan Medical School where he graduated with an M.D in 1977. He would then get accepted by the Johns Hopkins University School of medicine neurosurgery program and became a surgical intern for one year and a neurosurgeon resident for five years completing the whole program in 1983.

Upon finishing his residency in neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital, he took the position of a senior registrar at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital where he worked for a year. Carson returned to Johns Hopkins assuming the position of Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery. He is credited for developing new methods to treat brain-stem tumors; he is the man behind the revival of hemispherectomy techniques which control severe pediatric epilepsy. He is also recognized for leading a team of 70 surgeons in successfully separating conjoined twins who had been joined together in the back of their head.
Other achievements he is recognized for include undertaking a neurosurgical procedure of a fetus inside a womb and successfully performing the separation of type-2 vertical craniopagus twins. To date, he has been awarded over 60 honorary doctorate degrees and has written over 100 neurosurgical publications. He retired as a surgeon on July 1, 2013.
